The Perfect Outdoor Wedding – 3 Tips for Bliss in the Sunshine

By Matt Smolsky

A beautiful, sunny day is a perfect and romantic setting for an outdoor wedding – whether it’s in a park, on the beach or at your home.

But an outdoor wedding requires planning, foresight and flexibility. Weather is always unpredictable, your guests may or may not be comfortable sitting outside for an extended period, and the cake and other food require special considerations.

Here are three tips to help you make your outdoor wedding a success:

1. Make sure your out door setting is in perfect order. If you’re having your wedding at your home, start tidying your landscaping a month or two ahead. Perhaps plant some flowers that will bloom at the right time. Keep bushes trimmed, repair fences, and keep the yard free from clutter. The last thing you’ll want to worry about the right before your wedding is a major yard clean up.

If your wedding is on a beach or in a park, be sure to speak with whoever is responsible for maintaining the area. Find out what you can move – benches, trashcans, etc. – and what you can’t. Then, set up a time when you can get into the area to arrange it just the way you want.

2. Have a back up plan. Weather is the biggest concern for an out door wedding. Be sure you have a back up plan that you’ll be happy with, even if you have to use it. Perhaps you need to plan on setting up a tent the morning of the wedding if the weather looks threatening, or moving the event indoors. Whatever the case, you want to feel like you’re in control of the day, and not the weather.

3. Food and the cake. Most food will be fine outdoors. Your wedding cake, however, needs special consideration. Fillings may be perishable (especially cream-based fillings), and some frostings may not hold up well in the heat.

Be sure to work with a custom cake designer who will be at your wedding to set up and monitor the conditions. Most times, this will be an individual who runs a small bakery or a cake shop out of their home, as they have more flexibility than larger operations.

The key to an outdoor wedding is planning and keeping your options open. This way, you’ll stay in control and be assured of a perfectly beautiful day, no matter what.
